BEIJING – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is turning on
her personal charm in a series of public events in China, hoping to promote
people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
Clinton is taking time out Tuesday from difficult
high-level talks with Chinese leaders that have been dominated by North Korea's sinking of a
South Korean warship.
She is trying to emphasize the importance of cross-cultural understanding between the American
and Chinese people.
She presided over the first meeting of a committee that seeks to
send 100,000 American students to China over the next four years. And
she cheerfully participated in Chinese television programs that focused
heavily on her personal and family life, including the upcoming marriage
of her daughter, Chelsea.
