Kudos to the Magic for not folding up shop and saving a little face by winning game 4 and avoiding the sweep tonight. Dwight Howard, who had 32 points and 16 rebounds showed up to play, along with JJ Redick and Jameer Nelson who had 23 points and 9 assists. The Orlando team defense also made a big appearance helping force the Celtics away from what they wanted to do offensively. Vince Carter most decidedly did not show up and sat in crunch time in favor of Redick.
Boston had plenty of chances to win after erasing a 7 point deficit late, but were stymied by an offense that was disjointed and forced throughout the game and especially down the stretch in regulation and in overtime. They did managed to hang tight, making it interesting on the back of Ray Allen – who would probably show as legally dead on a thermometer with all that ice-water pumping through his veins – coming up just short in the end.
The offense was ugly most of the game for the C’s. The crisp passing and open looks that they rode to wins in the first three games ran off with Rashard Lewis’ shot. Rondo had an off game running the offense and was hampered by what was reported as “leg spasms.” Late in the game Paul Pierce played too much isolation and the Celts wasted possessions trying to force the Nelson on Pierce mismatch. Exploiting a weakness is smart but not when you expend 18 seconds of the shot clock trying to set it up every time. Pierce had 32 in the game and carried the team early but went cold down the stretch missing a few potential game changers. Bad game management by Doc Rivers and the team, not running plays for Ray Allen to get some looks at the end of regulation and overtime.
The Celtics defense showed up again tonight and allowed them the opportunity to win and punch their ticket to the Finals. They didn’t get it done and now they have to go try and finish this in Orlando on Wednesday. The Celtics are still going to win this series with 3 more chances to close it out. Unfortunately we are all going to have to listen to talk about what happened to the Bruins until they do.
Did anybody else notice those two guys sitting right behind Van Gundy, Breen and Jackson wearing the “Frank Caliendo” hats? That bugged me all game but I can’t find a picture online. What the hell? Were they family, friends, well wishers, escaped maniacs? Did he pay them to do that for the advertising? If you have tickets behind the broadcast team in Orlando Wednesday night, let me know in the comments and I’ll send you some “netdugout.com” hats and pay you handsomely in IOUs to wear them.
Finally, Big Baby Davis had another good game tonight providing energy off the bench. He had a big block of an attempted Dwight Howard dunk in overtime that regrettably bounced right back to Dwight for a lay in and foul that eventually proved to be the difference. Bad luck but nice block. He also provided us with what was either a scare tactic designed to creep out the Magic players or a little something for the ladies:
