Stephen Hill, 34, fled with the weapon after the attack at a movie firm's production centre and tape warehouse in an area known as "Porn Valley" near Los Angeles.
Police say one man was attacked and two others tried to intervene. One of those, a thirty year old man, was stabbed in the chest and died in hospital.
Hill had been living for several months in a studio which doubled as a porn movie set before being asked to move out last week.
Detective Joel Price said: "There was no indication that things were going to get violent, there was nothing that provoked this attack.
"But at some point Stephen Hill chose to arm himself with what can be best described as a sword.
"He then used that sword against those three victims."
Police say the three victims were not well-known porn stars.

He seemed like an OK guy who was trying very hard to get recognised and get his name out there.

No one was available for comment at the movie firm Ultima but it is believed Stephen Hill had worked on its website and featured in some of its films.
Industry insiders say Hill appeared in films under the name Steve Driver and the Internet Adult Film Database lists 13 credits for him, including fetish films for Ultima and other companies.
Steve Nelson, editor-in-chief of Adult Industry News, said he had met Hill at social gatherings.
He said: "He seemed like an OK guy who was trying very hard to get recognised and get his name out there."
Police say the porn star was on probation for carrying a concealed weapon in an unrelated case.
The incident took place near Van Nuys Airport in California's San Fernando Valley, which has become known as "Porn Valley" because it serves as headquarters for numerous adult movie producers.
