Toy
Story 3 had a huge play date with moviegoers over the weekend,
earning $109 million to bow at No. 1 and become Pixar's
highest-grossing opener ever, according to Box Office Mojo.
The sequel is the third animated film to crack the triple-digit
mark on opening weekend — after 2004's Shrek 2 ($108 million)
and 2007's Shrek the Third ($121.6 million) — and is the first
Pixar film to do so. The previous record for a Pixar opening was the
$70.4 million haul by The Incredibles in 2004.

Aided by 3-D ticket sales, Toy Story 3 also extended
Pixar's perfect streak of No. 1 openings to 11 and bested its franchise
predecessors. The original Toy Story, which ushered in the age
of computer-generated animation, debuted to $39.1 million over
Thanksgiving weekend in 1995. Toy Story 2 pulled in $80 million
in 1999, also over Thanksgiving weekend.
If estimates hold, Toy Story 3 will also top Transformers:
Revenge of the Fallen as the best June debut. Revenge of the
Fallen grossed $108.97 million last year.
Landing way back in second place was last week's No. 1, The
Karate Kid, which reeled in $29 million to bring its total to $106
million. The A-Team and Get Him to the Greek followed
in third and fourth places with $13.7 million and $6.1 million,
respectively.

The weekend's other wide release, Jonah
Hex, starring Megan Fox and Josh Brolin, bombed with $5.08
million to debut in eighth place. It was edged out by Shrek Forever
After ($5.5 million), Prince of Persia ($5.2 million) and Killers
($5.1 million).
Rounding out the top 10: Iron Man 2 (No. 9, $2.67
million) and Marmaduke (No. 10, $2.65 million).
