Jennifer Grey recently learned that she had
cancerous nodes in her neck when completing a physical for her to appear
on this season of Dancing With the Stars. While most were pleased to
learn that Jennifer Grey had in fact caught the cancer before it became
a major problem - it made us here at ThirdAge.com realize that few
people seek out physicals on a regular basis.
The entire topic of
cancer
has taken center stage recently. It began this summer when Dennis
Hopper passed away. Then, Michael Douglas stepped forward with his
admission that he's actively fighting a stage four cancer - and that
it began with just a mild sore throat.
Just as Hollywood pulls off the successful "Stand Up to Cancer"
telethon (which ultimately raised $80 million in under one week's
time)... We remember the one year anniversary of Patrick Swayze's
passing.
Sadly, it's not just Hollywood and celebrities troubled by cancer.
More than 500,000 people will die from cancer in 2010. Sex isn't an
issue, either - with the fatality rates of cancer being nearly equal
amongst men and women in America.
This should simply serve as a reminder... Its okay to let the
mainstream media keep the dangers of cancer fresh in your mind - but
nothing is more useful than regular testing. Speak with your doctors if
you find any symptom concerning, and while at your next physical - be
proactive: Ask for advice on how you can make healthier decisions, have
proactive tests done, and, ultimately be more aware of your personalized
cancer risks.
