John Terry was stripped of the England captaincy today after Three Lions boss Fabio Capello decided the Chelsea skipper could not continue in the role after a week of dramatic revelations about his private life.
That meeting quickly saw Terry's name fly up the Twitter trending chart as football fans around the world reacted to the news.
NikDarlington tweeted to MirrorFootball: "It was right to strip#JohnTerry of the captaincy, Capello has shown some much needed backbone here."
tonyhedges agreed, saying: "John Terry - I never thought it a good idea to make him England captain in the first place, give it to Stevie G!"
There was also support for Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard on the social networking site.
But not everyone agreed Terry's indiscretions off the field should have cost him the captain's armband.
JoeNewman said: "Very annoying this happened because he was the best man for the job by miles. Hope Capello doesn't pick Rio!"
And BWFC_Dave was concerned about the effects on England's World Cup preparations, writing: "John Terry dropped as England captain, think this one could cause some unrest in the England camp...World Cup in 4 months...not good !!!"
There were jokes, too, at Terry's expense, with Keith Chegwin commenting: "Sad times - John Terry's not our Captain anymore. I hear he's gonna make a fresh start as a WAG and BONE MAN."
Ilana suggested: "A better job for John Terry would be Vice Captain ..." while with vice-captain Rio Ferdinand set to take over, lordricardo tweeted: "John Terry 'just got merked bruv'", referencing the Manchester United players practical jokes TV show.
