Gay Marriages Can Resume In California

A judge has ruled that gay marriages can resume in California from next week.

The order to allow gay weddings will take effect from next Wednesday, Federal Judge Vaughn Walker said.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said: "I am pleased to see Judge Walker lift his stay and provide all Californians the liberties I believe everyone deserves.
"Today's ruling continues to place California at the forefront in providing freedom and equality for all people."

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said he "applauded" Judge Walker's decision which "comes not a moment too soon".
But Viktor Choban, a supporter of the ban - known as Proposition 8 - said: "God's Holy law has been trampled on by one person."
California voters passed Prop 8 in November 2008, five months after the California Supreme Court legalised same-sex unions.
An estimated 18,000 same sex couples had already tied the knot.
In a ruling that has implications for nearly 40 states with similar laws on their books, Judge Walker ruled last week that Prop 8 violates due-process and equal-protection rights under the U.S. Constitution.
