50 Cent - Obama Makes 50 Cent And Crawford Late For Premiere

50 CENT and CHACE CRAWFORD turned up late for the premiere of their new movie after the route to the venue was blocked by President BARACK OBAMA's motorcade.
50 Cent The rapper/actor and the Gossip Girl star were both due to walk the red carpet in New York City for the launch of their film, Twelve, but fans were left waiting after the cast got stuck in traffic as police shut off the surrounding streets to make way for the U.S. president.
When he finally made it to the cinema, 50 Cent explained his tardiness to reporters, saying, "It's interesting - the streets are blocked off for a few avenues. We had to go all the way around to get here, but he's the president."
While Crawford joked, "We shut down the street for the premiere and for me. I didn't want any traffic on Houston (Street) and then Obama just swooped in - figures! I mean, I called and invited him and texted him and he didn't want to come. It's just a mess!"
Lenny Kravitz's actress daughter Zoe admits she became so frustrated with the delays, she almost got out of her limousine and took the subway to the premiere.
She says, "We were in traffic for the longest time and I was like, 'What's going on?' I almost got out and took the subway, and the only reason I didn't was because it was so hot..."

Electric Cars Ready To Charge

Sparks flew in the electric-car market last week, capped off Friday by President Obama's short test drive of a Chevy Volt while visiting a General Motors plant in Michigan.Obama's visit came as GM and Nissan OTCBB:NSANY race to the finish line. GM's hybrid plug-in Volt and Nissan's all-electric Leaf are expected to hit select U.S. showrooms later this year.
They're leading the vanguard of a new generation of electric cars aimed at a relatively broad consumer market. Plug-ins from Ford (NYSE:F - News), Toyota (NYSE:TM - News), Honda (NYSE:HMC - News), Chrysler, Mercedes-Benz and BMW are expected to follow starting in 2012.
"We believe within three years every auto manufacturer will have at least one plug-in vehicle," said Mark Duvall, director of electric transportation for the Electric Power Research Institute.
As Nissan and GM unveiled new pricing and other details on their EVs earlier in the week, suppliers of battery chargers and other related gear flooded a "2010 Plug-In" conference in San Jose, Calif.
"Probably a quarter of the exhibitors were (companies) you've never heard of who came out of the woodwork with electric car chargers," said John O'Dell, editor of Green Car Advisor, part of auto site Edmunds.com.
Two leading charging suppliers are Coulomb Technologies and Ecotality (SCM:ECTY), the latter a small-cap that listed on the Nasdaq in May.
Nissan's Leaf has a 100-mile range on a full charge; it has no tailpipe and zero emissions.
The Volt's 400-pound battery can power up to 40 miles of driving. It's backed with a small gas engine that can bring the total range to 340 miles. Obama proclaimed his 10-foot-long test run "smooth."
Obama has said he would like to see 1 million electric vehicles on the roads by 2015. But that may be a steep hill to climb.
Duvall says the president's goal may be achievable and if so "would establish the technology firmly in the market."
But even the popular Prius hybrid from Toyota has logged fewer sales than that in the U.S. — 900,000 — over the entire 10 years the model has been on the market.
And though analysts see EV demand outstripping supply, that's largely because carmakers are moving slowly.
GM plans to roll out only 10,000 Volts in the first year. On Friday, it raised its planned 2012 production from 30,000 to 45,000.
Nissan says it'll start selling Leafs in California, Washington, Oregon, Arizona and Tennessee this year, with more states in 2011. The Leaf has a waiting list of 17,000. Nissan will sell 500 Leafs to rental-car company Enterprise.
"It will be a long, slow ramp up," said Philip Gott, managing director of IHS Automotive Consulting.
Gott doesn't expect a significant EV market in the U.S. for at least a decade. He estimates pure electric cars sold in the U.S. will go from just 30,000 in 2011 to 135,000-140,000 in 2016. That's a tiny fraction of the 12 million cars that came off U.S. assembly lines last year — or the industry's heyday of 16 million.
EV Sticker Shock
GM announced last week it would list the Volt at $41,000. The Leaf will sell for around $33,000. Neither price includes a $7,500 federal tax credit. Further credits from some states such as California would make the final tally even less.
Still, low-emission, high miles per gallon conventional cars have smaller sticker prices.
Leasing plans make the EVs more widely affordable. GM said it would lease the Volt for as low as $350 a month with $2,500 down, roughly matching Leaf's offer. Nissan says the Leaf would match the Volt's eight-year or 100,000-mile lithium-ion battery pack warranty.
While electric power is about a quarter of the cost of gas per mile, Duvall says EV makers' big challenge will be to cut upfront costs so that the long-term expense to own and operate will be less than for regular cars. "That can happen in as little as five years, but more likely in 10 years," he said. "The first year for a new car design is always the most expensive, but it's worst for the Leaf and Volt because they have the new technology."
He added, "Over time, (carmakers) will learn how to do this more cost effectively and you will see the cost of the cars come down."
Let's Make Money, Eventually
Lower input costs and higher sales would mean that plug-ins would go from money losers for automakers to profit makers, analysts say. How long that will take is unclear.
California-based electric car maker Tesla Motors (NMS:TSLA), which went public in June, has sold over 1,000 Roadsters worldwide since 2008, each costing over $100,000. It has yet to make a profit. A Model S sedan for about half that price after tax rebates is slated for a 2012 launch.
A few carmakers tried electric cars in the 1990s, most notably GM with its EV1.
But they never gained much traction due in part to limited battery power — and cheap gas. GM discontinued the EV1 in 2002.
"What you have today is a confluence of technology development meeting the recognition of a need at some point in the near future to reduce our carbon emissions," Gott said.
By 2030, Gott says, electric cars, including hybrid plug-ins like the Volt, could make up 20% to 30% of the global auto market.
In Europe, Renault will soon release the Fluence EV sedan and a tiny EV two-seater called the Tweazy. BMW already sells the E-Mini.
Japan has an aggressive campaign to expand EVs, especially taxis. China still has relatively few EVs; the government is "dabbling" in EV infrastructure investments, says Michael Robinet, vice president at market researcher CSM Worldwide.
"If China decided electric is the preferred mode, it could make a tremendous impact on the rest of the world," he said. "I think it will be something in the middle, a mixture between gas and battery."
Cracking The Electric Egg
To address the "chicken and egg" issue in the U.S. — selling electric cars before enough chargers are around to keep them going — government incentives are fueling development of battery stations in several regions coast to coast.
Charging stations are going in parking lots and outside government agencies, apartment complexes, grocery stores and other retail spots.
These "opportunity chargers" are meant for top-offs rather than full-blown charges, most of the latter likely to be done at home using common 120-volt household outlets. With a 220-volt, the charge time is cut from eight hours to four.
Some retailers are starting to put chargers outside their stores, including Whole Foods' (NMS:WFMI) flagship in Austin, Texas, and the South Coast Plaza mall in Costa Mesa, Calif.
"The fact chargers will be out in large numbers in various regions diminishes range anxiety" — the fear of being stuck on the road without any power, said O'Dell.

Jennifer Lopez reportedly joining 'American Idol' as new regular judge

Jennifer Lopez will be joining American Idol as a regular member of its judging panel, according to multiple reports late Thursday night.

"Jennifer accepted the Idol judge position," a show insider told OK! Weekly.  "They are ironing out contracts as we speak so unless something goes wrong it's a done deal."

Reports of Lopez's American Idol addition surfaced only a few hours after Fox and Ellen DeGeneres announced the comedian and daytime talk show host has decided to "bow out" of American Idol and leave her judging position after just a single season.

"She's absorbing Ellen's salary which is why Ellen resigned today," the insider told OK.

Lopez's longtime manager Benny Medina organized the deal, according to People, which reported current judges Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi will both return for American Idol's tenth season and join the 41-year-old singer and actress on its judging panel.

"It's true," an industry source told People.  "She's excited about it."

Fox had no comment on reports of Lopez's American Idol addition.

Whether American Idol will also replace Simon Cowell -- who left the show after this past May's ninth-season finale to launch an American adaptation of his British The X Factor reality competition that will debut on Fox in Fall 2011 -- and continue with the four-judge format it has used the last two seasons remains unclear.

According to Deadline Hollywood, which first reported the news of Lopez's addition, Idol producers have been attempting to replace Cowell with Elton John.  However he is reportedly "asking for too much money and has too many touring commitments he can't get out of," resulting in Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler possibly being offered the position.

Reports that American Idol has been eyeing John as Cowell's replacement first surfaced in January and have continued circulating despite repeated denials from his representatives.  In May, Access Hollywood reported John rejected a $33 million offer from the show.

Fox and DeGeneres announced her departure in a Thursday evening press release.

"A couple months ago, I let Fox and the American Idol producers know that this didn't feel like the right fit for me," DeGeneres said in a statement.  "I told them I wouldn't leave them in a bind and that I would hold off on doing anything until they were able to figure out where they wanted to take the panel next."

Rumors that American Idol will undergo a large tenth-season shakeup that may result in the replacement of its entire judging panel have surged since multiple reports that former Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe -- who left the show in 2008 to focus on So You Think You Can Dance -- is near a deal to return to the show surfaced on Monday.

Earlier this year, Lythgoe repeatedly told reporters he would address Cowell's exit by replacing Idol's entire judging panel and return to a three-judge format if he were still in charge of the show.

"I'd lose the fourth judge, I don't like four judges. I'd keep Ryan Seacrest and probably change the whole panel to go with [Elton John]," Lythgoe told the New York Post in March.

"I would replace the entire judging panel," he told Zap2it in April. "I don't think it really works replacing one person. They don't have a great deal of chemistry at the moment. Ryan and Simon have fallen out. It's uncomfortable to watch. Ellen hasn't worked out as well as we would have hoped."

According to recent reports, Idol has also been considering Chris Isaak, Harry Connick Jr., Jessica Simpson, and Justin Timberlake as possible judging panel additions.  In addition, Sean "Diddy" Combs and Bret Michaels have also expressed interest in the show recently.

DeGeneres joined American Idol last September -- after the show had already conducted its nationwide ninth-season callback auditions for the judging panel without her -- under what was reportedly a five-year contract.

While it will be her first regular on-camera role, Idol's judging panel won't represent Lopez's first foray into reality television.

In 2007, she executive produced and made several cameo appearances in DanceLife, an MTV reality series that followed the lives of six dancers working to make it in the dancing business.

In addition, Lopez served as a musical mentor during American Idol's 2007 sixth season and served as the guest judge for Project Runway's fifth-season finale in 2008.

'Jersey Shore' Star Snooki Arrested In Seaside Heights

Just one day after the premiere of the drama-filled second-season premiere of "Jersey Shore," one of the show's biggest stars, Snooki, was arrested in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, where the show is currently filming, MTV News confirmed.
Police officials confirmed to MTV News that Snooki, whose given name is Nicole Polizzi, was in police custody at press time. No further details regarding the arrest or why she was arrested were available, but TMZ reports that she was arrested for disorderly conduct.

The gossip website further reports that Snooki was seen near the beach at Seaside drinking what was believed to be Coca-Cola from a beer funnel. Additionally, she was earlier spotted doing shots at a local bar. A rep for MTV had no comment on the matter.
In photos reportedly taken around the time of the arrest, Snooki is seen walking on the boardwalk along with her pals Vinny and Ronnie from the show. Snooki is dressed in a hot-pink tiger-print T-shirt that says "I Heart Snooki," a baseball cap, sunglasses, a miniskirt and hot green slippers. She was photographed being approached by officers and handcuffed, with co-star and friend JWoww by her side. It is unclear from photos what incident prompted the arrest.

Vanilla Ice Delcares Himself Lamer Than Before With Unnecessary Stunt

Vanilla Ice Declared Himself Lamer Than Before With Unccessary Stunt Vanilla Ice Delcares Himself Lamer Than Before With Unnecessary Stunt
Vanilla Ice. Words that follow are “Ice, Ice Baby” and that’s pretty much all the acknowledgment you need to give the “rapper.” If it weren’t already bad enough for him to sample Queen and David Bowie’s “Under Pressure” (and not give credit or royalties to them because of a “single note”), the one hit wonder has stooped to even more ridiculous activity that was probably set out to make him more “gangsta.”
Apparently, Vanilla Ice performed a stunt that involved him jumping a ‘67 Cadillac through a “wall” of fire and into a lake. Oh, did we mention this was for his TV show called The Vanilla Ice Project where he renovates and flips houses in Palm Beach?
Yeah, we know. The stunt is completely unrelated to anything on his show. However, according to On The Red Carpet, Vanilla Ice and his team have been promoting the long-waited stunt on radio stations. We’re not sure why because we hear he had quite the difficult time getting permission to even film the event and numerous complaints from the fire and sheriff’s departments and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have been made. Yet, it looks like they didn’t stop him because the show is set to air in September and we’ve actually got footage of the “epic” stunt below.
What actually happens in this video? Well, the wall of fire turned out to be more like a line of fire and the Cadillac – which appears to say things such as “Vanilla Ice” and “Ricky Bobby” on the side – sinks into the lake with the rapper inside. Oh, and there was confetti. After a few seconds of waiting, the rapper does crawl out of his seat belt and surfaces on top of the water but we definitely weren’t impressed. “That’s what I’m talking about! Where’s that Cadillac?” Uh… in the water, buddy. (Perhaps this is why he thought the “Ice, Ice Baby” sample sounded different.)

Cesc admits being Barcelona mad, but expects Arsenal stay

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas refuses to back away from being Barcelona mad.
The 23-year-old admits he is drawn to Barca, having supported the club for his whole life, but says a recent conversation with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has left him in doubt as to where his future lies.
"I'm a Barca fan, I'm a socio, as is my grandfather, my uncle, my cousin... I have felt the colours from a young age, I'm Catalan," Fabregas said in an interview to magazine DIR Emotions.
"However, I'm the captain of Arsenal, I'm a Gunner, and I have become a player there and matured as a person."
During that time, Fabregas has grown up under the tutelage of Wenger and the Spain midfielder says the Arsenal coach is like a second father for him.
"He is a second father for me, the most important person in my life after my father. He has behaved really well with me and taken me in like a son. I am part of his family," he said.
"He doesn't want me to leave. And in my last conversation with him in London, it was one of the most difficult moments I have experienced. I ended up very upset."

Justin Bieber smoking weed: Is Justin Bieber dead?

Justin Bieber smoking weed: Is Justin Bieber dead?

My World 2.0There’s always a good Justin Bieber rumor to keep everyone on their toes.  Tonight’s big rumor is that Justin Bieber has been smoking weed.  The rumor has circulated through the Internet and comes close to topping the number one Justin Bieber rumor, ‘Is Justin Bieber dead?”  Justin Bieber has made headlines recently for several things.  He is starring in the season premier of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation in September and he has been targeted by the anti-gay pseudo church Westboro Baptist.

My WorldJustin Bieber has not been caught smoking weed, photographed with weed or arrested for smoking weed.  It is possible that this rumor extends from Justin’s acting debut on CSI and the fact that he posted a photo of himself wearing an orange jumpsuit on his Twitter and referred to himself as a bad man.  For those who were unaware that Justin is acting in the hit show, it is understandable that confusion may have set  in.

Justin?Bieber, Arrows?Poster, 22-Inch by 34-Inch  Rest assured, Justin Bieber is still holding fast to his image and hasn’t done anything to rock the boat.  Apparently, the most scandalous thing Justin has really done is flirt with Tina Fey during an SNL skit and skipped through the waters of the Caribbean while holding Kim Kardashian’s hand.

Lawsuit: Antimicrobial Soaps Damage Reproductive Organs

A nonprofit environmental group has sued the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, claiming the agency failed to regulate toxic chemicals found in "antimicrobial" soap and other personal care products.
The National Resources Defense Council alleges that two common ingredients, triclosan and triclocarban, can damage reproductive organs, sperm quality and the production of thyroid and sex hormones.
According to the suit, which also names U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius as a defendant, recent bio-monitoring results found "residues of triclosan in 75 percent of Americans over the age of 6."
The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan on Tuesday. Representatives of the FDA and the Department of Health and Human Services declined to comment, saying it was a matter of policy not to comment on lawsuits.
Plaintiffs contend that the FDA violated federal law in its delay over establishing safe conditions of use. More than 30 years ago, the agency first proposed to regulate such products for over-the-counter use, but they remain on the market and are unregulated, the group said."As a result of the FDA's lengthy delay, consumers remain exposed to triclosan and triclocarban through a variety of over-the-counter drug products, such as antimicrobial hand soaps, that proliferate on the market," the lawsuit stated.
The suit seeks an order requiring the FDA to finish its study on the conditions of use by a specific deadline. No manufacturers or retailers were named as defendants or were cited in the lawsuit.
The FDA said in April it was reviewing the safety of triclosan. It noted there was no evidence it could be harmful to people and did not recommend changing consumer use of products that contain the agent.
POPULAR PRODUCTS
The popularity of antimicrobial products has grown in recent years and the products are increasingly found in homes and offices, where germs can easily be passed from person to person.
The lawsuit cites various recent studies that associate the chemicals with a host of health risks, from lower thyroid hormone levels to the disruption of testosterone production.
In 1978, according to the lawsuit, the FDA proposed to ban from interstate commerce both triclosan and triclocarban either six months or two years after publication of its final study, but no action was taken until 1994, when some ingredients were reclassified.
"Healthcare antiseptics containing these chemicals remained on the market and increased in prevalence" since 1994, the lawsuit said.
The National Resources Defense Council said it had met with the FDA to try to hasten the study, to no avail.
Responding to a letter from U.S. Rep. Edward Markey of Massachusetts in February, the FDA said it could not give a specific timeline, but said it was "working diligently" to publish the proposed rule. It also cited a lack of long-term data regarding potential health effects from exposure to the toxins.
The case is National Resources Defense Council v. USDA et al, 10 CIV 5690.

Sources Say ABC's Steve McPherson Resignation Linked to Sexual Harassment Inquiry

Steve McPherson ABCThe resignation this week of ABC entertainment honcho Steve McPherson was surprising enough, but now the affair has taken an ugly turn.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, McPherson, who's led the network for six years, resigned as he was the subject of an ongoing, formal investigation surrounding charges of sexual harassment.
McPherson's attorney, Tom Hoberman, issued a statement to THR which, curiously, didn't include specific denials of the rumors surrounding an investigation:
"Upon Steve McPherson returning to work from his vacation on Monday, he made a voluntary decision to resign and ABC accepted his resignation," read Hoberman's statement. "It is not uncommon for high level executives to be the subject of gossip and innuendo. That would include rumors of internal situations which can easily be misinterpreted or misrepresented. Seems like it goes with the territory, and there is nothing further to discuss."
ABC also didn't deny the rumors, and responded to questions by simply re-issuing the statement they made when McPherson resigned on Tuesday:
"Steve McPherson today submitted his resignation as President, ABC Entertainment Group, and the Company accepted. Mr. McPherson said, 'I want to thank the wonderful team of individuals who have worked with me throughout my time here and wish them nothing but the best.' A replacement for Mr. McPherson will be announced shortly."
McPherson's resignation was particularly surprising given the timing, as ABC and the other broadcast and cable networks are presenting their fall programming lineups to TV critics this week in Los Angeles during the annual summer Television Critics Association tour.
But THR's sources say several complaints of sexual harassment had been filed against McPherson, and that a formal investigation had begun three weeks before he resigned.
The complaints are said to involve both network executives and on-air talent at ABC, and to include e-mails as well as an incident that took place during a company retreat.
Meanwhile, whatever the outcome of the investigation, McPherson's departure will have an impact on ABC's efforts to move up from behind Fox and CBS in the ratings, since he was responsible for developing several of the network's biggest recent hits, including, as TV Squad reported yesterday, 'Lost,' 'Modern Family,' 'Desperate Housewives,' 'Grey's Anatomy' and 'Dancing With the Stars.'
As for McPherson replacements, ABC Family head Paul Lee is thought to be the main contender.

Regulator Defends Yahoo Japan Deal

TOKYO—Japan's antitrust regulator on Wednesday defended its decision to allow a new Internet search agreement between Google Inc. and Yahoo Japan Corp., a move that drew criticism from Microsoft Corp. and surprised antitrust experts.
The company explained that Google and Yahoo Japan would run their businesses separately despite sharing a common search engine and advertising platform, he said.
"Based on those conditions, the partnership wouldn't immediately cause any problems related to antitrust regulations," said Mr. Matsuyama, who added that the FTC will "continue to monitor" how the actual partnership develops to ensure that Yahoo Japan and Google stick to the original conditions.
Once completed, the partnership between Yahoo Japan and Google would lead to more than 90% of all Web queries in Japan being run through the U.S. Web giant's data centers.
The move marked a significant blow to Microsoft's renewed efforts to challenge Google in the Internet search arena. Microsoft said the tie-up will "eliminate search competition in Japan."
The Japanese regulator's decision differs from the approach taken by antitrust regulators in the U.S.
Google and Yahoo Inc. of the U.S.—which holds a 34% stake in Yahoo Japan but doesn't control its Japanese sibling—agreed to a search advertising deal in 2008 after fending off an unsolicited takeover bid by Microsoft. Several months later, Google pulled out of the agreement after U.S. regulators threatened to launch an antitrust lawsuit to block the deal, which it deemed likely to "harm competition."
Yahoo Japan spokesman Toru Nagano said one difference between the U.S. case and his company's agreement with Google in Japan is that, unlike its U.S. cousin, Yahoo Japan has never developed its own search engine or advertising system technology. It is currently using technology developed by Yahoo Inc. to run its search engine and search advertisements. Before that, for three years until May 2004, it used Google's systems.
When Yahoo last year said it would use Microsoft technology to power its search business, Yahoo Japan was left to choose between Google and Microsoft.
Yahoo Japan Chief Executive Masahiro Inoue Tuesday said one factor was that Microsoft had been slow to localize its Bing search service in Japan. Microsoft removed Bing's "beta" label in Japan on July 12, meaning the system has left the testing phase; its search engine's market share in Japan is about 3%.
Yahoo Japan said it will continue to innovate on top of Google's technology and compete with Google for advertising and users. Mr. Nagano, of Yahoo Japan, compared it to two chefs creating entirely different meals even though they buy the vegetables from the same farmer.
A Google official didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
JYAHOO
In Europe, Google is already facing antitrust scrutiny. In April, Google said European antitrust authorities have opened a preliminary inquiry into complaints about the Internet group's tactics from three European Web companies. Google has denied violating European law or taking any action to stifle competition.
Jiro Tamura, a law professor at Keio University, said Japan's FTC may not fully grasp the new characteristics of the search business, whereby search engines improve as they process more queries. By controlling over 90% of the search queries in Japan, Mr. Tamura argues, Google's search engine will become increasingly better than rival services over time.
"I don't know if the FTC has correctly understood what lies ahead with this collaboration," said Mr. Tamura, an expert on Japanese antimonopoly law.
He said Japanese antitrust regulators are very cautious compared to their more proactive European and U.S. counterparts and therefore they may be waiting to see how the partnership plays out before taking some action.
Ted Henneberry, a senior partner on antitrust and competition law at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, said he was "stunned" that Japanese regulators didn't take a longer look at the deal especially since the FTC has reputation for being extra cautious so as not to rushing into a decision.
JYAHOO"Given the extensive investigations in the United States and Europe into Google and the Google-Yahoo deal, it's difficult to comprehend," said Mr. Henneberry. "A situation where somebody is going to end up with 90% market share in Japan without a full investigation would be out of character for the FTC." At a Wednesday news conference, Takahide Matsuyama, secretary-general of Japan's Fair Trade Commission, said Yahoo Japan consulted with the regulatory body ahead of its Tuesday announcement disclosing the deal, under which Yahoo Japan will use Google's Internet search technology for its own searches.

Janet Jackson Blackglama Fur Controversy

Janet Jackson Blackglama furThe Janet Jackson fur controversy is unfolding with a ferocious roar. Pam Anderson slams Janet Jackson while PETA says she is desperate for modeling in Blackglama fur ads. It is a sign of our trying times that even celebrity dimwits are feuding during the Obama recession.

This is a Right Pundits open talk thread where you can discuss anything you want today. I am choosing to discuss Janet Jackson, Blackglama furs, and why exactly Canada hates Pam Anderson. Just because I am hungry for some juicy steak, I liked Baywatch, I tolerate Canada, and I think that I look totally hip in animal skins.

Just what is Blackglama you ask? That is a black (cool people say “ebony”) fashion company which has a history of using celebrities in their ads. The likes of Diana Ross, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Lena Horne, Lauren Bacall, and now Janet Jackson Blackglama campaigns have been seen through the decades.
They were never controversial until PETA and that brainiac Pam Anderson got into the mix. Janet Jackson is desperate according to PETA for a simple modeling gig for a useful warm product, something we could all use during the current global cooling cycle. Read about those spoilers here, to wit:
“It’s amazing what celebrities will do when their careers are on a downslide, but we didn’t think that Janet was this desperate.”
So then an even further downsliding celebrity, Pam Anderson slams Janet Jackson on PETA’s behalf. Read about the loud mouth here.
“It’s disappointing. She has spoken out against fur before. I don’t know why some people stop listening to their heart. I guess some people get greedy, but it’s sad.”
Speaking of Pam Anderson and PETA, Canada banned her last PETA ad for being sexist. No wonder we pay no attention to Canada. They seem to preoccupy themselves with the most trivial matters every day while our heroic president fixes the economy and golfs on alternating days. You can see the controversial Pam Anderson ad here, banned forever in that country north of us.
But back to the main point. The Janet Jackson Blackglama ad photo-shoot video is below. Tell us what you think of the manufactured “controversy” in the comments and what the world should be talking about instead today. My view is that an endorsement by Elizabeth Taylor, Lena Horne, Lauren Bacall (hello girl!), Diana Ross, and Audrey Hepburn (yo!) takes all comers. In court we would call it legal precedent.
But PETA and their proxy Pam Anderson slam Janet Jackson for being desperate, thus creating an epic fur controversy which almost nobody actually cares about. Dear loyal readers, this blog post is now in your hands. Comment and then move on to the economy, stupid.

'So You Think You Can Dance': The least exciting results show ever

(Claire Zulkey is out this evening, which means you get to put up with me this week. -- Todd VanDerWerff
)
It was one of the few non-injury-plagued results shows on "So You Think You Can Dance" this season, but it also was chock full of filler. There were two very special musical guests, plus a performance by the cast of "Step Up 3D." I understand that all of these things appeal to the "So You Think You Can Dance" audience, but I, personally, was reaching for the remote before I remembered I was watching live and couldn't fast forward the madness. There also was plenty in the way of Nigel lecturing America, as well as one of the least suspenseful eliminations ever.
Look, Lauren is my favorite of the dancers left. She seems to be the favorite of all of the judges as well. She weds the technical proficiency the best dancers on the show have with a winning personality that might remind you of the baby-sitter you had when you were 8. She's good at pretty much whatever the show throws at her, and she's comfortable with all stars, with her fellow contestants and all by herself. The second she was in the bottom three, there was no question that Jose (who has been barely scraping by for weeks now) and Billy (who deserved to make the finals over at least Adechike) were going to be going home.
Frankly, there was no way the judges were sending Lauren home, but there also was no way they were going into the final two weeks without any girls, particularly when there are still one and arguably two (I don't mind Robert as much as some fans) pretty lackluster male dancers left. Even with this late stumble, I'd still put Lauren at the odds-on favorite to win the whole thing unless she cracks under the pressure over the next two weeks (though she should be safe next week under the same "the-judges-will-want-a-girl-around" principle).
Fortunately, tonight's episode gave us a good sense of how Lauren would rise to the occasion, and she did so splendidly. Where Jose mostly seemed to just throw himself around the stage sans rhythm or pacing or anything but a desperate attempt to get the judges to pick him over Billy or Lauren (something he must have known wasn't going to happen) and Billy performed an odd dance that made him look like a spider or something and ate up too much of his time with strange, slow movement, Lauren pulled off a rather sultry number that wedded her technical prowess to some nice moves and a hint of soul. It wasn't her finest moment ever, but it was better than the other two (though Billy's was building to something interesting when he was cut off).
Other than that, though, the whole thing was kind of beside the point. The opening group number was fun, as always, and featured Allison nicely, but the rest of the episode felt incredibly rushed, as though the producers felt the strain of getting the musical numbers all in there. [For the record: The original version of this post said that the number featured Lauren, not Allison.] And it wasn't enough to just show a shortened trailer for "Step Up 3D." There also had to be a full number featuring the dancers from the movie that, frankly, left me wanting to change channels. I know that a couple of the cast members in the movie are from the series itself, but the nice thing about a show like this is that you form relationships with the contestants, and leaving them for four or five minutes is never a good idea.
The same goes for the musical numbers, which have never been this show's strong suit. One was by the artist Christian TV, and the other was by Allison Iraheta. Neither was terribly memorable, though the Christian TV number, at least, was better than the "Step Up 3D" thing that preceded it. The thing that has made the "So You Think You Can Dance" results shows so entertaining all these years is that they feature the dancers from the show trying new things. I'm sure with all of the injuries this season, the producers are wary of having the dancers do too much beyond their routines they're already scheduled for, which is understandable, but there has to be a better way to fill the time.
Anyway, when it all came down to it, the producers kept Lauren, as anyone could have predicted, but not until after Nigel took the time to lambaste America and/or the show's critics for any variety of sins. He also offered strange, strange farewells to Billy and Jose, and said to Billy, at one point, "We love you soaring through the air when you dance, but please keep your feet firmly on the ground in life," which makes sense but only barely. But, then again, Nigel's ramblings are a part of the show, so they're easier to tolerate. It's just too bad that we had to lose Billy this early.
In the future, then, let's hope that "So You Think You Can Dance" keeps the promotional material to a minimum and focuses on the dancers we know and love doing fun dances. And let's hope that Lauren wins the whole thing, going away.

iPod Nano Recalled - Device is a Fire Hazard, Says Japan

iPod Nano. The trade ministry in Japan says the iPod Nano is a fire risk, and claims that the Apple music player has burned at least four consumers.
iPod Nano, one of the most popular devices in Apple's line of mobile electronics and personal music & video players, is now being recalled. Japan's industry ministry has ordered Apple to report on measures it will take regarding cases of its iPod Nano music player overheating and catching fire, an official said Thursday.
Yahoo! News provides us with more information on this important recall notification and safety information:
Overheating of the 2005 iPod Nano while charging has caused at least 27 incidents, including six fires that required firefighters to be called, an official from the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry said. "Four people burned themselves after they touched the device, which had overheated during charging," he said.
"The ministry repeatedly asked Apple Japan to take market measures, such as giving warnings or recalling the products, but it has failed to do so," he said, adding the ministry issued the order late on Wednesday. Apple has sold about 1.6 million units of the first iPod Nano model in Japan.
The ministry also ordered the company to report on incidents not only at home but overseas as well, the spokesman said. The latest setback for Apple follows the launch of its iPhone 4, which has been dogged by reception problems linked to its new design and manufacturing issues that have led to the delay of the white version.

Eminem the 'godfather of hip-hop'

Eminem has been handed the ultimate compliment from his rapper pals Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo - they've hailed him as the "godfather of hip-hop".
50 Cent's G-Unit bandmates have been left in awe of the rap superstar's popularity after Eminem made it five weeks atop the U.S. albums chart on Wednesday with his comeback record Recovery.
The controversial rapper racked up first week sales of 741,000, earning him his sixth consecutive number one on the Billboard 200, while his Rihanna song Love The Way You Lie has topped the singles chart for a second week.
Banks insists Eminem's success is down to his "cult" fan base and he's impressed at how the superstar has managed to keep in touch with his devotees throughout his personal problems.
He tells MTV News, "I know he's happy and I'm happy for him. It's big. Em has a cult following and they ain't (sic) gonna turn their backs on him...
"He brings you into his life. You know about his wife, his kids, his best friend. On that last album (Relapse), he touched on a lot of those topics and other personal things he had going on, too. A lot of people can relate to it. I feel like his music is getting more and more powerful. The messages are bigger." And Yayo is convinced Eminem has reaffirmed his status as a rap icon with his latest release topping charts around the world.
He says, "Eminem is like the godfather of the hip-hop game. In a time like this, when records are not selling, he's the only one that is selling. You know, Drake and all the other ones (did well), but Em did (close to) 800,000 (in) his first week, and he's number one for the fifth week. It's incredible.

BUGGING BOYFRIEND FOR MARRIAGE PROPOSAL?

Britney SpearsBRITNEY Spears is letting her emotions run away with her!
Sources say the troubled singer — who has been married twice before — is pestering boyfriend Jason Trawick to walk her down the aisle!
“Things are going great between Britney and Jason,” said a source close to the star. “But she keeps bugging him about marriage and he’s finding it annoying.
“While Jason says he can see himself settling down with Britney, he admits he’s not sure that now’s the right time.”
Spears — who has been dating Jason, her former agent, since last summer — recently dined with her man’s mother and father at the Grafton on Sunset Hotel’s Olive Kitchen + Bar.
According to People magazine, the foursome were at the eatery — where they chowed down on meatballs and margarita pizza — from about 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
“Britney seemed to fit in very well with his family,” a source said.
“She seemed very comfortable. She was very warm to them.
“Britney and Jason were really affectionate, but at the same time very respectful.”
